Reading .txt files

I just got some .txt files emailed to me from a news service and when I open them in Notepad or MS Word in any filetype, the text does show up, but there are so many other weird characters on the screen, it's almost impossible to read. What can I do?

    yodelaehee,

Try opening the file with Wordpad or Notepad and see if that helps, it is most likely due to how they formated the txt file.

    Thank you for choosing Dell.

I ended up getting on a MS newsgroup site and read a document that said to Copy, Paste Special - Unformatted Text. It worked. How does this work?
