NEC dvd rom problem
i purchased an OEM NEC ND-2500A for my dell dimension 2400 but it came w/o software, only the hardware. i installed it as the slave drive, but now im having problems playing it. At first i installed windvd but it wouldn't play, then i used WMP and it didn't work either so as a last resort, i installed Interactual Player. The Interactual player said that i needed some kind of dvd decoder. After a brief search on download.com, i found a dvd decoder, and alas the dvd player worked, but it expired after 5 minutes and now i cannot watch dvd's anymore. Where can i get a dvd decoder? do i have to purchase one? ALso, the dvd doesn't play too smoothly, if i upgrade RAM, wil it fix this problem?

Hi Henry,
When you say Slave, do you mean set the jumper to Slave or set the jumper to CS and attached to middle connection on IDE Cable?
Dell ships their systems using the Cable Select Feature, so I would suggest you use that for now with the new drive.
Also verify that you have DMA enabled for the drive, click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 15, article 14.
WMP needs a third party program for the codecs, WinDVD should work depending on the version you have, did you check at their web site for possible updates?
You may have to break down and purchase the Retail version of a program such as WinDVD. For now though, follow this link

Also a Google Search on "Free DVD Players" will produces a few hits as well.

A DVD decoder is software that can interpret the video off a DVD. Intervideo WinDVD and PowerDVD both install DVD codecs that allow the system to playback DVD video.
Unfortunately, most are commercial software, but there is a freeware one called MaximusDVD (ATi have one too if you have one of their video cards and the software). However, the freeware one has very poor quality compared to PowerDVD and WinDVD.
As for the choppy playback, is DMA (Direct Memory Access) enabled for the ND2500-A?
I have the same DVD-/+R drive, and mine plays DVD smoothly.596

I listed the steps for checking DMA setting in my first post, Section 15 article 14 of the CD/RW link in my signature. Also article 13 is a Dell Utility on setting it. Article 14 has illustrations on the prodcure, must have missed it
