OK, When it was mentioned that I need to do a format-reinstall..does that mean I have to use the CD that came with my computer and if so, does that not wipe out everything I have on the hard drive? Also, I don't have all my cd's... like for my cable modem to re-install..so I want to make sure I get this right and I appreciate the simplification in the response, I just want further clarification.

Yes, a format-reinstall will remove everything from the system.

If you buy a new system, you'll face the same issues. At a minimum you're going to need the XP CD, any application software CDs that came with the system (WordPefect, Microsoft Office, WinDVD, Roxio CD Creator, etc.) plus whatever software your cable company provides.

After you install, make sure to:

Enable the XP firewall.
Update to SP2 and all post-SP2 critical updates (there are a LOT of them and you'll need to run Windows Update several times until you don't see any new ones listed).
Install the chipset, video, audio, modem, and any other system drivers in that order.
Install antivirus software.
Then install your other applications.

It costs nothing but time to do a format-reinstall. This time, enable the firewall and install antivirus software after you do so.

It should cost no more than a couple of hours labor to format-reinstall even if you have a pro do it - far less than the cost of an equivalent system brand new.
