Whats wrong with using the 875 chipset RAID 0 function???
Why did Dell configure my XPS with SATA RAID 0 using a Promise PCI card instead of using the SATA RAID 0 function of the 875p chipset on the motherboard??? I understand that NOW they do use the 875 chipset but I got my Deminsion XPS about 2 months ago and it uses the PCI card setup. WHY? Can this be changed so that I can use the 875 chipset RAID 0 function and get rid of the PCI card to free up a slot that I could use for something else???
There is nothing wrong with the chipset. The reason you do not have RAID built into the chipset is because Dell decided to save a dime and the chipset is the 875P ICH5 NOT ICH5R, R for RAID, which is what you would need. You are losing some performance by not having the RAID function on the motherboard since the PCI slots can only transfer data at 133MBPS as opposed to a 150MBPS onboard.
Darn Dell, I hate losing a PCI slot that I could use for something else. And worst of all, they now use the proper chipset configuration for RAID functions in their new units. No more promise PCI card.
The utility is set up that it mainly identifies the chipset, the 875P and is telling you the variations of the chipset that are available. I wish there was a RAID function on these boards but again Dell chose to save a couple of bucks and not offer the feature. There is no way we can enable the RAID function either with drivers or any other method.
Thanks for your answer. I could have sworn I posted this yesterday, but it isn't posted so I will post it again. I ran the Intel chipset utility and it reads as follows.
Detected Chipset: Intel 875 chipset family
Chipset Components
Memory Controller: 82875P
I/O Controller: 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R), SATA and PATA enabled
Integrated Graphics: Not Detected or Disabled
So you see this utility tells me that this chipset can do SATA RAID. I wonder what would happen if I tried to use the function??

Hope this helps.
