Active Stylus Problems

I assume most people aren't using the Active Stylus or there would be more posts concerning it's erratic operation. For me this device is not worth keeping without proper Active Stylus operation. Occasionally it seem to work properly, but to often it acts as if the stylus is touching the screen even when its not. This seems to happen with all of its functions, inking in OneNote, on screen keyboard handwriting recognition, selecting icons... I have the latest firmware and drivers, I hope they are working on a fix, the last ones didn't resolve the problem.

Yes that is the real stylus.  Wonder how long these will last on there now, since people are getting $80-90 for them on Ebay...  I have two myself but I'm holding out to see if they can fix the battery issues somehow, I have one that works fine except for the quick battery drain when near the tablet.

I ordered my stylus on Dec 11, and finally received it today.  I waited patiently, as I was hoping it would work fabulously.  But, either I have no idea how to use it, or it does not work as it should.  I came on here hoping someone could help, as the only directions that came with the stylus are pictures that basically say- put in the battery, and use...

Do I need to calibrate?  Are there special settings in Windows?

The stylus you received is the original and flawed design. Because of the problems with the stylus Dell has removed it from the website and it's currently unavailable. Dell tech support told me they're working on a new design and it should be available in March. I have spent at least 8 hours on the phone with tech support since November. It hasn't been a good experience. Because they couldn't supply me with a stylus that worked I wanted to return the tablet and stylus. I talked to a manager in customer care about this situation and she was extremely rude, she acted like my request was totally unreasonable, and I should be satisfied with this poor design. They will give you a refund for the stylus, but you can only return the tablet to Dell within 30 days.

Please confirm whether or not the label on the stylus package states "REV A01" and "Mfg Date Jan 2014"

Yes, the "instructions" are an insult, and — yes there are Control Panel settings which will allow you to twealk and customize the pen's behavior. However, before undertaking your exploration of the pen's features, you'll need to download and install the several updates intended for your tablet (if you haven't already). Dell's System Auto Detect feature is a reliable way of getting all (and only) the updates intended for your particular model.

@ Computerstuff_Marton: I'm still interested in attempting to help ohgijane — if you haven't already chased them away. Besides, if you were following the matter more-closely you would know that Dell has already been shipping the revised pen to some Venue owners for the better-part of a week...

Sorry to learn of your troubles!

Lou Stule I’m on my second stylus, the first one quit working after a few days. The second one sporadically acts as if it is touching the screen when it’s not. I’ve been working with Dell since November to resolve this problem. Always hoping the next latest firmware or drivers would fix this erratic operation, it hasn’t. It would be nice if Dell would be more forthcoming about what is going on. What you’re saying is not what Dell has told me.

Reports of problems with the Active Stylus have persisted for months and forum discussions about those problems are scattered across multiple threads. I don't know if you will consider this 'good news' but other users are reporting that they have recently received the revised model:

Along with most people that are having problems with the stylus I think this tablet is a great device. Although for me it’s almost worthless without the stylus. I hope they get it resolved. Through the conflicting information Dell has told me and their lack of forthrightness, I’m left to do some speculation, which is just that, speculation. Do we know if this stylus "REV A01" and "Mfg Date Jan 2014" has resolved all the problems people are having? The stylus is still not available on Dell’s website. From what Dell has told me I think there’s another revision or redesign coming, that’s only speculation. I will think it’s “Great News”, not only when people receive a revised model, but when the stylus performs as intended for everybody.

I do have the stylus with the Jan 2014 manufacture date.  I'm not sure what the Dell System Auto Detect is, but I do believe that I have all of the current updates.

The Dell Active Stylus used for the Venue Pro tablets and XPS 11 convertible requires the device to have Synaptic's Digitizer, whereas the most popular active digitizer used in devices is from Wacom. Your stylus from the Latitude 10 is probably either capacitive or uses another technology like Wacom. Samsung's famous S-Pen uses Wacom technology, as does the active stylus now offered from Asus in the VivoTab Note 8 that just hit the market. Wacom has mastered the use of active digitizers and e-ink, and companies like Samsung have especially fine-tuned the experience in Android devices (through their Touch Wiz UI software). Dell has started shipping a second generation of this active stylus (the label on the back of the box shows A01 with a manufacture date of Jan. 2014 in comparison to the A00 revision's manufacture date of Oct. 2013 seen in initial shipments), I got my first one today. I went through two of the first generation stylus, the first of which suffered erratic behavior when anywhere near the screen and the second ate through batteries like they were Tic-Tacs. I have read good things thus far about this second generation and I am holding out hope the changes made eliminate the issues with battery drainage. Updates to the firmware for Synaptic's active digitizer in these units have improved useability a great deal, no more erratic on-screen behavior from wither generation stylus. I really do not use the stylus very often but like to have it when I do want it and got tired of changing the battery every 3-5 days just to use it again.
