Enable compression on existing lun
Hi,
I want to enable compression on an existing lun containing a vmfs datastore on a Unity 350F array. To have it compressed entirely I have to do a lun move in the same pool. The lun must be accessible to the vsphere hosts during the move. How safe is this lun move operation while the lun is still online? Are there any risks? Or is it better to create a new empty compressed lun and vmotion all vms to it?
Franc.

The LUN Move will compress the data as it's being copied so there will be an impact on performance while that's taking place. Creating a new LUN with compression enabled and using vmotion is another way, but you're still going to need extra CPU resources to compress the data.
I would also mention that in the latest code release, there have been enhancements made to the compression code that might help reduce the overhead. Make sure you are running the latest code before you start. The current recommended code for Unity is 4.2.1.9535982.
