    Log doesn't show anything obvious.

    Download tasklist.exe from

and SAVE the file to C:\windows\system32

Then Start, Run, cmd, OK to bring up a new black cmd window.  Type (with an Enter after each bold line)

    tasklist.exe /svc > \junk.txt

    netstat -o >> \junk.txt

    notepad \junk.txt

(This will bring up notepad.  Copy the section where it talks about svchost.exe and paste it into a reply.  Also copy the bottom section that starts with Active Connections and paste it to the same reply.)

    Hi Ron

MANY thx for looking at this - its driving me mad. Info requested below.

    A few things I've noticed:
    - Problem goes away if I run MSConfig and choose mimimal startup, but if I do a defrag during this time, I see the same 5 sec spikes. I wonder whether its something to do with the lazer writer that flushes the disk cache?
    - I've tried shutting down each of the services in SVCHOST but got 'access denied' for some of them even tho I'm an administrator. RASMan inparticular showed Access Denied.
    - Problem exists even when I'm disconnected from network and wireless netword disabled.

    Thx

What is this?  Is it a local site?

Do it again but this time add an n after it.

    netstat -on > \junk.txt
    notepad \junk.txt

You can't disable the svchost because there are so many riding on it but you should be able to disable the individual services with sc.

Start, Run, cmd, OK then type (with an Enter after each bold line)

    sc stop Browser

(should stop the Computer Browser service)

    sc start Browser

    (starts it back up again)

    sc config Browser start= disabled

(Tells it not to start again other options: manual  automatic - just like in services.msc)

Work your way through the list and see if you can find which is causing the problem.

    AudioSrv, BITS, Browser, CryptSvc, Dhcp,
                                     ERSvc, EventSystem,
                                     FastUserSwitchingCompatibility, helpsvc,

                                     TapiSrv, Themes, TrkWks, w32time, winmgmt,
                                     wscsvc, wuauserv

It seems likely that there should be an Event recorded for whatever is going on since it's probably not normal.

Check the Event logs for errors:
Start, Run, eventvwr.msc, OK then select System.  Look for red marked files that have a time stamp about the time of the slowdown.  Open the event then click on the bottom of the three buttons to copy the text.  Move to a reply and Edit, Paste.  Repeat for any other different errors that happened during the last slowdown period or last reboot.  Please don't go back to the beginning of time and no events from a Safe Mode boot.  Repeat for Application.  If your PC speaks something other than English don't translate it unless it doesn't use the Latin alphabet and then please include the timestamps.

Check the Device Manager for problems:
(Start) then rightclick on My Computer and select Manage.  Then Device Manager.  click on each of the + marks to open each item.  Look for yellow marked items and uninstall them or delete them and reboot.  Do they come back with yellow marks?

    The problem is Netman.

If run msconfig and disable netman, then reboot -> no problem

If the enable netman, I get the spikes.

Strange thing is, if I then stop netman, the problem does not go away.

    Weird.....any ideas?

Run Hijackthis and select the scan only option and check this line then Fix Checked.:

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MsnMsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe" /background
I think the first netstat -o was showing us a garbled attempt to reach the msn server.  Maybe it's got some problems.

Reboot and see if you still get the same thing.

Also do a netstat -o again.

I'm also wondering what made all of the connections to dell.lithium.com in the last netstat -on.  Were you doing something?  When I go there I get redirected to the Dell forum.  Don't know why you would have so many connections open at once.

    More info:

Deleting the msnmgr entry as suggested in you last post didnt help :-(

Contrary to what I said in an earlier post, if I Stop the netman service, then this does drive the problem away -> definately a Netman issue.

    Is this service essential?

seems to imply you need it but I don't know for sure.

This guy says it will cripple your network:

It sounds like something is trying to send a lot of packets which is why I picked on msn messenger since that was the only thing running in netstat -o the first time and it was garbled.

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode with Networking?  Do you still see the same spikes?  Is netman running then?

    Check for a bad program:
    Start Run, msconfig, OK
Go to Services tab and click on the box to hide Microsoft Services then uncheck
everything that remains.  Go to Startup tab and uncheck everything.  OK and
reboot.  If it doesn't run faster then go back into msconfig and recheck the
things you turned off.  If it helps then go back and turn on a few items each
time until you find the culprit.

Start, Run, eventvwr.msc, OK then select System.  Look for red marked files that
have a time stamp about the time of the slowdown.  Open the event then click on
the bottom of the three buttons to copy the text.  Move to a reply and Edit,
Paste.  Repeat for any other different errors that happened during the last
slowdown period or last reboot.  Please don't go back to the beginning of time
and no events from a Safe Mode boot.  Repeat for Application.  If your PC speaks
something other than English don't translate it unless it doesn't use the Latin
alphabet and then please include the timestamps.

Check the Device Manager for problems:
(Start) then rightclick on My Computer and select Manage.  Then Device Manager.
click on each of the + marks to open each item.  Look for yellow marked items and
uninstall them or delete them and reboot.  Do they come back with yellow marks?
