New Intel chip flaws
Intel said it was first informed of the Foreshadow flaw by two sets of researchers in January 2018. Its own researchers confirmed the findings and they also found additional variants that affected SGX-enabled chips that run virtual machines. These flaws are documented as CVE-2018-3620 and CVE-2018-3646.
Affected chips:
- Intel Core i3/i5/i7/M processor (45nm and 32nm)
- 2nd/3rd/4th/5th/6th/7th/8th generation Intel Core processors
- Intel Core X-series Processor Family for Intel X99 and X299 platforms
- Intel Xeon processor 3400/3600/5500/5600/6500/7500 series
- Intel Xeon Processor E3 v1/v2/v3/v4/v5/v6 Family
- Intel Xeon Processor E5 v1/v2/v3/v4 Family
- Intel Xeon Processor E7 v1/v2/v3/v4 Family
- Intel Xeon Processor Scalable Family
- Intel Xeon Processor D (1500, 2100)
Guess that means more firmware updates and Windows updates are probably coming... :Ick:

I got an "out-of-band" Win 10-1803 update KB4100347: Intel microcode updates yesterday, 8-21-18, via Windows Update for my laptop which has a Gen 3, i3-3217U CPU.
"Intel recently announced that they have completed their validations and started to release microcode for recent CPU platforms related to Spectre Variant 2 (CVE 2017-5715 [“Branch Target Injection”]). This update includes microcode updates from Intel for the following CPUs..."
My Inspiron has a relatively old Ivy Bridge CPU, so I don't expect Dell to be releasing any firmware updates which Intel mentioned to go along with the new Windows update for the latest microcode.

Has anyone noticed a reduction in how long a battery charge lasts after installing Windows update KB4100347 which was supposed to fix some Intel security issues?
Since installing that update on my Inspiron lappy with Gen 3, i3 processor, the battery discharges much faster than before the update. If I'm lucky it lasts ~1.5 hours now but it typically lasted ~3-4+ hours before the update, always starting from 100% charge. Could be coincidental, so comments appreciated...
BTW: the battery diags say it's "healthy", and it recharges to 100% after an hour or two.

Unless I'm misreading this, Microsoft included software updates in its AUGUST '18 security/cumulative updates.
