Reinstalled XP to remove preinstalled McAfee

I just bought a new Inspiron 6400 - beautiful machine. It came with Windows XP Home and McAfee preinstalled. I uninstalled McAfee through the "Add and Remove Programs" control panel. Sadly the Windows Security Center still told me "McAfee VirusScan reports that it is up to date ...".

That was obviously wrong since McAfee had been uninstalled. I used RegScrubXP to remove left-over McAfee traces in the registry and after this performed a manual search and removed about 50 more. Then I installed AVG. Sadly Windows Security Center still told me "McAfee VirusScan reports that it is up to date ..."

At this point I had spent about four six of stuffing around including researching the problem on the internet. I decided to cut the losses and reinstalled XP which was without problems.

I am extremely disappointed the Dell pollutes their otherwise fine product with this absolutely terrible software that cannot be uninstalled.

McAfee comes as a 90 days trial which is meant to be uninstalled if the user decides not to continue with the product. I noted that four days after foolishly registering with McAfee (which I needed to do to see the subscription status), I already got a e-mail that bugged me to extend the subscription. Terrible!
