CIFS implemention, any warnings?

Hi All,

We're about to embark on a project to replace MS File Clusters with CIFS shares presented via a VNX5500. We're new to this having only used block storage  before, so are there any rookie errors to avoid?

Thanks in advance.

use VDMs (virtual datamovers), size file systems properly (you can expand on the fly, can't shrink file systems). Take advantage of Snapsure (snapshots), ABE (access based enumeration). Use emcopy/robocopy/sharedupe for migrations.

I'd also add, understand your options for backup and recovery.  Understand how NDMP backups differ from client-based backups within an OS.  I highly recommend many of the instructional EMC videos on the web.  They'll give you ideas to ask more questions and discover other ways of doing things.

    Good luck!
