Cannot deleter messages from IE 6

My husband suddenly can't delete any messages from IE 6.  He hits delete and nothing happens.  I checked his deleted file and it turns out that he never deletes the deleted file so has accumulated more than 23000 messages.  I tried to highlight messages in the deleted file and delete a bunch at a time, but they wouldn't delete either.

He doesn't like to automatically delete when he exits IE because he's afraid he might deleter something he needs.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

    I'm confused,

"can't delete any messages from IE 6"

Are you talking about e-mail messages or IE history, temp files.....

I'm talking email messages.  When he hits "delete" nothing happens.

Try this,  Find the Deleted Items.dbx file
Then rename the Deleted Items.dbx to Deleted Items.old this will force Outlook Express to create a new dbx file when you log back in
If this works  you can delete the old Deleted Items file and you should be all set.

Try highlighting the message and holding the shift and delete keys simultaneously.

Also try deleting the messages in safe mode.

IE 6 is Internet Explorer 6, not Outlook Express 6. It is not clear what you are trying to do or what program you are asking about.

Oops!  I meant Outlook Express.  Always do get those mixed up in my silly mind.

I tried finding a Deleted Files.dbx on my computer before trying it on my husband's, , but  there wasn't any.

I ahve Outlook Express 7 on  a  Dell XP.

    He also has XP.

    Thanks, Peggy

Hi:  So what do I do with it after I find it???? It's a very long name and doesn't have any dtx involved.

I was just up fiddling with his computer and the whole Outlook express is behaving strangely -- very slow to download (that could be his distance from the router which has been a problem before)
and sometimes just freezing up.  Right now, I'm doing a defrag on it to see if that helps.

Could we transfer the entire OE to another drive and then start over?  He doesn't want to lose all the email, but I've told him he can't let the deleted box get up to more than 23,000 again.  Geez!!

Any help is appreciated as always,

To see the dbx file extension, you need to go to control panel "folder options" and go to View tab, and Untick the box "hide extensions for known file types" and hit OK, now you will see the .dbx file extension in that folder store, now follow the advice of highlander48.

Yippee!! It worked!  Thank you so much everyone.  My husband thinks I'm a genius. Of course, I am!

I assume that if he wants to access any of those old deleted files, he can find them, yes?

    Again, thanks!
