I have a laptop (inspiron) that came with xp and a desktop (dimention) that I have recently upgraded to xp.
On the laptop, very often when I fill in information online (ie: a search or filling in an online form) - as I begin to type in a field, a box appears showing the last time I typed something similar. For instance - an email address, when I type the first letter, my email address appears below and I click to accept it rather than retype.
I always assumed this was a function of xp, but this does not happen on the desktop.
Is this a function of xp and if so, how can I enable it on the desktop?
It is a function of Internet Explorer not of XP. The Autocomplete function is controlled by settings you can reach through Tools|Internet Options|Content tab, Autocomplete button.
I did find autocomplete and check all of the boxes and then restarted my system - but autocomplete just doesn't seem to work (when I tried it in on pages where I know it works on my laptop).
Is there anything else that I should enable (or disable) in conjunction with this to make it function?
If you just enabled it, there are no entries in its database to use to autocomplete an entry. If youi visit a page which requires an entry, complete the entry, then revisit that page the autocomplete function should work for you. There are no settings other than those in the Internet Options.
