Renew NAV2002 or get 2005

It's time to renew my Norton AntiVirus 2002 subscription. Should I continue to do that again this year if I like what it presently does for me? Or should I purchase the NAV 2005?

Never, never, never pay Norton to renew a subscription.

Simply go to the Symantec website and review the rebates in existence - http://www.symantec.com/homecomputing/rebates/  Find one that allows your NAV '02 to qualify for the upgrade rebate.  For example, SystemWorks Premier works, Norton Internet Security, Norton SystemWorks, ...  Then buy that product from a leading retailer or Amazon when it's free after both rebates.  I NEVER pay for Norton on three computers.

I found the $20 rebate form on the website you listed. It's for the purchase of a boxed NAV 2005, so I will pick one up at a local store.

Yes, NAV offers $20 on the upgrade.  However, keep an open mind.  First, look at all the rebates for the different products, then ONLY buy the one that is FREE after rebate.  That changes by week and by store.  And of course any online store that ships product, like Amazon, is fine also.  All you care about is that you get a Symantec product that includes NAV, of which nearly all do.  If you don't want the other components, then don't install them.

Do you have a Fry's near you?  Thru today they have a three user Norton Anti-Virus 2005 for $70, less two rebates, one for $20, the other for $50.  So, you and two friends or family could have it free after both rebates.  How about a CompUSA near you?  They currently have one user Norton System Works (includes NAV 2005) for $70 minus a $10 rebate and a $60 dollar rebate; again, free after both rebates.  These were just the first two I looked in, BestBuy, CircuitCity, CostCo, etc, all have similar deals periodically.  If the store near you doesn't have a special like this now, wait a week, or consider buying on-line.

Optionally, if you're not super attached to Norton, check for other software products offering similar rebates.  You will qualify for upgrade offers from most of the competitors as well.  Currently, Trend-Micro PC-Cillin is one of the best rated on the market.  Click the NIS2005 link in my signature below to see a review of multiple security programs, including anti-virus.

Depending on the age of the machine, consider AVG as well.  It didn't do quite as well as some others in the reviews, but it's still pretty decent and doesn't suffer from the bloat that causes some other products to cause system performance slow downs.

I've had NAV for 6 years and have recently changed to AVG. AVG has a 100% rating on (nt) virus detection and Norton ~ 56%. After installing it, it found 4 trojans that NAV missed. I'm sticking with AVG for now.

I had nsw2003 and added nav2005 on top. Folded in very well. The nav2005 was able to uninstal the 2003 version automatically. I do not think it will uninstal nav2002 so you may have to do a manual uninstal.

I actually then added nsw2005 later and everything went well.

A friend got NSW2005 for $49.95 CAN plus a $40 CAN mail in rebate  - total cost $9.95 + taxes

His and my rebates came through within 6 weeks.

I agree that one can find a new version that will end up costing less than renewing subsciption.

I use AVAST, but I still have Norton 2002 AV. I was able to keep extending the time by reformatting the hard-drive.(Because of other problems) I'd still get a whole year from the point of reinstall.

I bought NAV 2005 and started filling out the rebate form. I might not qualify. My Dell Dimension 4300 came with a preinstalled NAV. Can I still get the rebate?
