Slow PC

I purchased an Inspirion 600m 6 months ago.  When I start up my computer, after my password screen, it takes a long time for my desktop to come up.  Then when I'm opening or saving files in Word or Excel, it takes a long time to switch to different folders...a good 3 or 4 minutes.  If I open them in explorer, it doesn't take as long.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to what my problem may be or how to solve it.  Thanks.

I don't know if this applies, but on a network, when you open folders in a different place it can take a very long time sometimes.

Yes, I already know that.  However, I'm not on a network when I'm trying to access these files on my hard drive.  Thanks anyway.

OK. You are not on the network (now even we know that).
But do you have any mapped drives, network shortcuts?

    Did you try:

    Unplugging all external devices?
    Restarting in Safe Mode?
Un-checking Automatically search for network folders and printers (Folder Options)?
Checking for improperly installed devices (Device Manage)?
    Inspecting Event Viewer?
