Window 98 won't shutdown

Since loading SBC DSL to my computer, it won't shutdown, only restarts.

I've tried everything SBC has suggested including removing the ethernet card and all the software.  Nothing works.

Any suggestions?

    Umm, unplug it?

(Sorry, just couldn't resist that one... too easy)

Seriously, some older machines and systems react funny to system shutdowns.  My old machine requires me to NEVER select re-start.  For some odd reason, the Promise Ultra ATA-100 Hard Drive controller card does not re-initialize properly every time when I do a restart, so the computer thinks there is no hard drive.  I power it down, then power back up, and the hard drive is found.

My work around is simply to shut down, wait 5 seconds, then restart.  It takes a few extra seconds, but it saves me the aggravation of having it not find my hard drive.

How this applies to your machine, I don't know.  I do know that sometimes on older systems they just don't act like you'd expect, and the only real way to get them to behave is to either reinstall windows 98, upgrade to XP, or upgrade to a new system.  In this case, the upgrade to XP may be the ticket, depending on the specs of your computer.

    Thanks.

I reloaded Window 98 and now my computer shuts down.
