xp install
i have a inspiron 6000 with pentium 1.86 ghz, 1 g of ram and 80 g hd. i was having many issues and lockups (blue screens) so wanted to do a clean install. went to reinstall windows xp pro. started process and then got the error file \i386\ntkrnlmp.exe could not load error code 7. set the bios back to the default settings and changed the ram with sticks from another working 6000. tried one slot at a time. used kill disk to wipe hd and started all over again. still the same error. reset the cmos battery, took hd and dvd drives out and reinstalled. same error, file i386\ntkrlmp.exe could not load error code 7. so i tried another windows installation disk (xp home) and the same error. ran the dell diagnostics and everything passed. any other ideas

Glad you got it worked out. Good luck. :smileyhappy:i was a little premature about everything being ok. windows was starting to load when i sent the response.
the installation keeps getting hung up saying setup cannot copy files. many, 10 or more. i get three choices enter to try again, esc to skip or f3 to quit. well if i hit enter, many times, some load (maybe) but if i hit skip widows does not load right. so i'm going to use dft and try again. any ideas why i cannot load xp home / service pact 3.
