XP Pro Crashing (Randomly) During Startup
My Inpisron 9100 has been running smoothly for nearly a year now but in the last couple of weeks its started crashing randomly during startup, or more to the point, Logon.
The really annoying part is that Explorer.exe crashes, and then Dr Watson Post Mortem debugger crashes along with it rendering the system useless. Repeat the restart a few times and eventuallly it will startup ok.
I tried doing a system restore, actually serveral, to a point well before the trouble started but had no success. I've also removed rarely used programs that have startup services also with no luck..
So I checked the Event View and I get the following related messages
1. The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted.
2. Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x8b9ed428.
3. Faulting application drwtsn32.exe, version 5.1.2600.0, faulting module dbghelp.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault address 0x0001295d.
4. Windows saved user PUKKA\ep registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.
So if anyone has any ideas I'd greatly appreciate it, this is driving me completely mad!
Cheers,
Greg
ps: have already done a full virus scan and run adaware to check for any nasties.
