Go to SolutionXPS 8950, intermittent SSD boot problem
Has anyone else with an 8950 and SSD hosted Windows OS, encountered this intermittent boot problem.
On occasion it seems the BIOS/POST fails to recognize the 1TB M.2 PCIe NVME SSD and hence the OS fails to boot and tries a PXE network boot if enabled then goes to SupportAssist Diagnostics with message "Boot failure on device".
I've tried changing default BIOS SATA setting from RAID to AHCI. So far the problem has not re-occurred but it's only been 24 hours, albeit with multiple test reboots.
If problem persists then replacement SSD seems next option. but Dell informed 6 week delay with replacement part.

FWIW, my self built desktop with an NVME SSD is set to AHCI. First boot device is "Windows Boot Manager".

I had a problem with the boot order changing in BIOS each time I updated the BIOS. That is why I was wanting to change to AHCI from RAID. I do not know a lot about computers but I was wondering if it had something to do with adding a second NVMe drive and replacing the HDD with a SATA SSD. I followed the link you provided in my thread and switched to AHCI and I will respond back if the problem re-occurs.

A change in the boot order is the first thing I noticed with this problem. I then discovered when the BIOS fails to recognise the SSD (OS boot), the other options, eg PXE nics were promoted above Windows Boot Manager, because the Windows Boot Manager wasn’t found (it’s on the missing SSD).

Was this on an already installed system? I did change the SATA/NVMe Operation from 'RAID on' to 'AHCI/NVMe' (in BIOS Setup/ advanced) but the machine simply switched off after showing the Dell logo. Did you have to do anything else I might have missed?

Yes, to switch from RAID to AHCI, I had to follow the instructions at the following link, to ensure Windows boots successfully with the correct drivers.

And just to confirm this also fixed my problem of the boot order changing itself. The issue has not reoccurred for me.

It's one year later for my nearly one year old XPS 8950. This appears to be the exact problem I was (probably still am) having. It first happened after tech support took over my machine 2mos ago as I was trying to set up repair of a clickety PSU fan. I contacted another Tech agent. He tried to get me to boot into BIOS. At that time, even that didn't work. Yesterday, I turned on my machine first time after return from Depot. The clickety-clackety is gone, but I was still getting the PXE Nic's attempt: everything mentioned here. I discovered that the drive wasn't listed in the BIOS but three other attached drives were.
I haven't changed from RAID (read the other thread) as I was waiting on a Display port cable to try that. After 3 re-seats of the 512GB Dell-installed PCIe drive w/ OS, it booted up, went though updates, and has been working again. One of my other three drives is the Samsung 970 EVO Plus mention in the linked info above.
I mention this because it seems whatever the issue is, it is still around. Based on some other posts, Dell doesn't seem to have a clue.

A week later and I’ve had no boot problems since I changed SATA setting from RAID to AHCI.
