Hi,

I have an existing PE2950 with DAS, running VMWARE ESX 3.

We want to expand this, add another 2950 and move the VM to an AX150 with dual processors.

The servers have stack of nics and we'd like to connect through a pair of crossed 6228 switches.

The switches will only be used for the iSCSI network.

Other than reading heaps of PDFs and drawing lots of diagram, here is what I have actually done with the hardware.

Leaving the existing PE2950 alone for now, I have installed ESX on the second sever.

Assume my production network is 10.0.0.0, all masks are 255.255.255.0.

ESX2

nic0 : production network 10.0.0.64

nic1 : iSCSI sw0 192.168.1.50

nic2 : iSCSI sw1 teamed with nic1

From a server on the production network I ran the Init tool and configure the AX150i like this :

AX150i

SPAm : production network 10.0.0.67

SPA0 : iSCSI sw0 192.168.1.100

SPA1 : iSCSI sw1 192.168.2.200

SPBm : production network 10.0.0.66

SPB0 : iSCSI sw0 192.168.1.101

SPB1 : iSCSI sw1 192.168.2.201

After commiting the config, it came back with an error saying there was a delayed response.

However running the util again, detects the using at Initialised and the name is the same as I set.

I can ping both management nics.

My questions are :

As the iSCSI nic in ESX have been teamed to a single vSwitch, in the 192.168.1.0 subnet, should I have configured all the iSCSI data nics in the same subnet ?

Do the SPs need to be in seperate subnets ?

Should I split the ESX team and have two vSwitches one in each iSCSI data subnet ?

Should the AX150i management nics be in the same subnet as the ESX iSCSI vSwitch (vmkernel+service), or are they ok in the production network ?

I was think it was ok to have them in the production network to initialise, but do they need moving the the iSCSI network to be used by ESX (post init) ?

Do the management nics support SNMP, if so, how ?

Does ESX configure the drives/volumes/rtaid etc on the AX150i, or should that be doen before hand ?

Do I need to install any specific iSCSI software on the ESX server?

Sorry for the barrage of questions.

Thanks

Matt
