13 R1, bricked by BIOS update

I have an old 13" Alienware laptop that I'd not used in a while. I needed a decent laptop to replace my busted worked one and figured this would fit the bill. I re-installed Windows and went to grab the latest drivers; I wouldn't normally touch a BIOS update, but the website flagged that the update was "urgent" to fix a vulnerability: CVE-2018-12126,CVE-2018-12127,CVE-2018-12130 and CVE-2019-11091.

I work in Cyber security so I'm fairly clued up technically (hence the fear of BIOS updates), but figured in this case It would be prudent. Sadly the update failed - on running the update fans all immediately spun up to full speed, some green blocks appeared on the GUI, then it hung and alas it is no more.

I know it is a terminal issue, but wanted to raise my disgust; this is appalling - there are no warning on the urgent update, and no warning before the program kicks off; just double click the exe, UAC pops up - click yes and boom no more laptop.

It's an old laptop so out of support, but still pretty high spec and going for £500 second hand and thanks to a flawed recommended update it's now only fit for the bin. I can't even contact Dell support as the website tells me tough luck it's out of support. I'm considering my legal options as this was recommended on the website and therev were no warnings / checks before their shoddy software went and destoryed a functioning laptop.

Anyone had a similar experience?
