Q: why do i need VTLU, was it used during server_archive backup.
You would want to use VTLU if you want to keep catalog information about your backups, that's why it requires that you use 3rd party backup application. You have created a backup file with server_archive, which is nice but do you know what went into that archive file ? Do you know which archive file contains which version ? No ...that's where VTLU and 3rd party backup application comes into play. To me ..server_archive is poor's man backup
but to answer your question ..no ..VTLU was not used during server_archive process.
If you are asking about backup methods for the Celerra - you have a number of options but I'd suggest one of the following:
1) Leverage NDMP to manage backups for the Celerra to a directly (or SAN attached) tape drive. Most products such as Netbackup, Networker, etc. support managing NDMP based backups. This puts the tape management into a known application, but allows you the speed of direct attached tape backups.
2) For smaller environments you could backup fileshares on the Celerra through a regular Windows host. The upside is simplicity (existing host, existing backup client, etc.) while the downside is performance impact and lack of a support for NFS attributes in dual mode environments.
I'd stick with option 1) if you can support doing that in your environment.
yes, you can backup data using server_archive command on the ControlStation. You have to have a tape drive connected to the datamover.
