DCOS 6.7.3 | SC4020 Compression, Performance Hit? | All flash
I have an all flash SC4020 I wish to use compression on. I'm running 6.5.30 right now. I know I'll have to upgrade to 6.7.3 if I wish to use compression effectively.
Has anyone used compression on tier 2 in an all flash Compellent array? If so, was there any gotchas or performance hits?
SC4020 (8GB FC)
Tier 1: SLC
Tier 2: MLC
I wanted to use TLC drives in Tier 3 and configure that with compression, but Dell doesn't support the use of TLC drives if MLC drives are in the system.
They simply allow you to enable compression on Tier 1 or Tier 2 in an all flash array.
I"m mainly interested in the performance impacts incurred, if any. My controllers are generally at 5% CPU util, and peak around 40% CPU util when data progression runs.
Hello! We have been using compression on our SC4020 (8Gb FC, Firmwares 6.7.5.5.01 and now 03) for a couple of weeks now and have basicly noticed NO performance impact whatsoever. Our disk are poorly performing SanDisk SSD's (WI) LB806M with array config 8 wide RAID5. Our general IO load level is only moderate.
I tried to check the performance impact from the co-pilot support - the first guy said "read the manual and white paper" (REALLY!) and the second and the third guy were not much more use. It states in the white-paper that the performance impact occurs when it's doing the replay and in read operations concerning "stagnant" blocks.
In our experience the performance impact is minimal compared to the saved space benefit (which is NOT enormous but still beneficial since we have a high write % environment)

I'll be upgrading my primary storage to 6.7.3 tomorrow. So I will have the answer to my own question soon.
