I have a Dell Dimension E521 with a Sempron 3400 CPU. I recently installed Ubuntu 7.04 and formatted/partitioned the hard drive completely. I noticed that Dell has an update to the BIOS, but all the downloads are .exe files (Windows). Is there a way to get the BIOS firmware on a .tar archive or binary file on a floppy to carry out the update. I don't want to install Windows OS on this system. Thanks.
Hi croc40 :
Sadly, there are issues with the BIOS upgrades of the E521 (Please have a look in the forum). I would strongly advise you not to touch the BIOS unless being advised to do so by your Dell technician. Otherwise you may face a dead mainboard and being forced to buy a new one at your own cost.
The technicalities for a BIOS upgrade are very easy : Burn your BIOS xxx.exe file on a CD. Then boot your E521 with the Dell Utilities CD to enter DOS and in DOS you can run your CD with the BIOS xxx.exe file. Then follow the instructions on the screen. That's all. However please don't do this without being advised by ...

Thanks maotouyig. I am also having an issue when the video card, ATI 100TX 256MB PCIe, when I upgraded to Ubuntu 7.10. I thought the BIOS update would help. Again, thanks.

* Need the libsmbios package installed
* Need to get the bios update file
* Perform the update and reload the system for this to take place.
You can get all this information from the following:
