Linux For Beginners.

Hi,

I have heard there are many distributions of linux and I have just installed ubuntu 7.10 on my system although the graphic seems to be cool and the application menu is more than enough ( I am just a basic user of computer mostly for searching the web and checking my emails and some office works) but I am stuck with installing modem and connecting to web issues in Ubuntu 7.10. So I was wondering can anyone recommend a distribution of Linux which meets my needs.

I have DELL INSPIRON 1300/B130  -- 512 MB OF RAM  -- 60 GB OF HARD DRIVE

Thank You for your Help.

Everyone has their own opinions about different Linux distributions, but I think Ubuntu is generally considered to be one of the easiest for beginners. I've also heard good things about PCLinuxOS, though I've never used it myself. Also, if you're having problems connecting to the internet, it's not likely that switching to a different distro will help. Most will probably end up using the same drivers for things like network or graphics cards.

    Hello bahramd!

In general, I found "PCLinuxOS", "Linux Mint" and "openSUSE" to be user-friendly and to support a lot of hardware out-of-the-box at the same time. Maybe you're lucky and your modem (I suppose it's a so-called Win-modem?) works with one of these...
If you want to get more information on the various distributions (like reviews which frequently comment on supported hardware), have a look at http://distrowatch.com/ .

    Good luck!

Thank You! But I think I will stick to UBUNTU since I have figured out some solutions to some of my problems.

I'm glad to hear that. There are plenty of very good guides, how-tos etc. on the web. Nevertheless, don't hesitate to post a message again when you're stuck with a problem.
    And now, enjoy Linux! ;-)

Of course these Dell forums are good, but you might want to take advantage of the formal Ubuntu forums and there is one for Dell:

Between teh Dell forum and the Ubuntu one, you should have plenty of information about the various distros.

BTW, I have used PCLinuxOS on my old Dell Dimension 4100 and found it quite nice, but I switched to Ubuntu 7.04 and then upgraded to 7.10 without any problems. I have just about retired that machine since it had only 256Mb of memory and old 900MHz processor, but it appeared to work fine.

I now have a Dell 530n and am running Ubuntu 7.10 and it works very wll. I think if you stick with Ubuntu either the gnome interface or the Kbuntu you will be amazed at what you can do. I work on my Windows machine now very  rarely.
