Radeon 5870 drivers?
Dear all
I own a Dell/Alienware Aurora with a Radeon 5870 video card.
I am aware that I have to stick to Dell's video drivers and that it's not possible to directly install ATIs generic drivers.
Dell's support site list's the following "recommended" drivers (inter alia):
- Radeon 5870 Drivers, dated 23 October 2009 (!)
- Newer (= may 2011) drivers for radeon 68xx and 69xx-series (but not for the radeon 5870).
Can I install the 68xx/69xx drivers or do I have to stick with the old (clearly outdated!) drivers? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is no rule saying you cannot install ATI's drivers, in fact it is probably better to do so:

I installed the new reference drivers after deleting the old drivers (and using Driver Sweeper) - works flawlessly (so far).

Do you happen to know whether my graphic's card firmware is up to date? (BIOS Date: 2010/9/21).

Well, your VideoBIOS is newer than my Dell version 5870 (my Aurora is about 1 year old now).
I haven't seen a VideoBios posted for the Dell 5870 cards yet, but they usually only do that if the VideoBIOS changes are critical.
