Audio programs say "no recording device found"

My XPS 420 has the Sigma Tel High-Def Codec - integrated sound - also have Sound Blaster MB Audigy MB Audio -- [sounds awful]  Roxio, Creative and Windows Media all tell me "No recording device found"  -- I am completely frustrated.  In addition, does anyone have a recomendation for a good sound card I could install to get rid of this totally inadequate setup?  My old computer had a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 THX with DVD Audio and worked just peachy-keen under Windows XP.  This one leaves much to be desired.

I assume you are referring to the "system mixer" or "what you hear" function so you can record streaming audio which the Dell Integrated Audio does not have.

The optional sound card that Dell sells with new PC's is a SoundBlaster Xfi model.  However, people are having "skreeching" problems with those - scan through the many posts on the XPS Desktop section which is just for XPS Desktop users.

I don't know if a Retail Xfi card, or which model, would work.  Again the XPS Desktop may be the best place to ask your question.

One note, if you use a PCI sound card you will lose the front panel headphone and mic jack capability unless you can get the needed cables from Dell spare parts.

I have the dell integrated Realtek High Definition Audio, and I can record streaming video & audio - I played around with some settings in the Realtek Audio Manager program, but I don't remember exactly what I did - I remember clicking on the mixer tab, and then the mixer toolbox - checked off all the boxes there - and I see in the Realtek properties in My Computer, in the mixer devices properties, "use mixer features" is enabled

I use a program to watch the Big Brother streaming live feeds, and this program has the capability to record the stream, and the audio & video are recorded successfully

My XPS 420 has the Sigma Tel integrated audio and it seems you can never record streaming audio or video with it - so I've been told.  [By Dell and others]. Dell techs say I don't find a recording device at all because a driver must be 'broken' -- well if it is, Dell broke it.  I may not even try to fix that part of it.   I'm a violinist,  music librarian for an orchestra and also transcribe music -- and I use "What U Hear" A LOT  ! ! I'm now thinking of either trying to find an SB X-Fi Xtrememusic card [which they tell me can work with the new Vista drivers] or perhaps getting an Audigy 2 ZS - since they're still around.  I've had probably 30 Dell machines and this is the first time I've been disappointed - but I sure am.  Thanks to everybody for the info...........
