BATMETER.DLL (SETUPAP.DLL ERROR MESSAGE)
This is a general help message for anyone who owns a Dimension 8100 loaded with Windows ME.
PLEASE DO NOT PROCEED IF YOUR OS IS WINDOWS 98, AS THIS FIX WILL ONLY WORK FOR WINDOWS ME.
Last week, after getting an auto-update from the Windows ME Auto-Update Utility online, my system booted up and as soon as Windows started, I got the following error message:
"BATMETER.DLL file is linked to missing export SetupDiGetDeviceInterfaceDetailA".
While this may not seem to affect general system performance, it does remove the speaker icon from your toolbar. It may also hinder your ability to install new devices, especially USB-based devices.
After a week of discussing this with support via email, their final suggestion was to create a Windows ME startup disk and run extract.exe from DOS after using the ME startup disk to boot the computer. This is a pain, and some of the specialized commands that need to be entered can be a real headache!
Well, here is the solution that worked for me, and hopefully it will work if you have a similar problem:
1. Hit Start/Run and type "msconfig"
2. Windows ME has an option to extract files directly from the msconfig system utility. Hit "Extract Files".
3. A blank will come up asking which file you would like to extract. In the case of BATMETER.DLL, the file path is C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
4. The system will ask you where you would like to extract the file from. In the case of BATMETER.DLL, the file path is C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS
5. The system will then prompt which file you would like to replace. The path is C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
(Note: For options 4 and 5, these are the default paths anyway, so you should be able to select them automatically from the pull-down menus).
6. Select to Extract and the system will automatically replace the corrupted BATMETER.DLL file with the proper file.
Replacing the SETUPAPI.DLL file is more tricky, as this file is protected.
7. Boot your CPU in "Safe Mode" (hold CTRL while your system is booting up, and it will be one of the options on the Windows Startup Menu). YOU MUST BE USING A PS2 MOUSE FOR THIS TO WORK, AS USB PORTS DO NOT LOAD IN SAFE MODE.
8. Hit Start/Run and type "msconfig"
9. Hit the "Extract Files" Option.
10. The file path to enter here is C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SETUPAPI.DLL
11. The system will ask you where you would like to extract the file from. The file path (default) is C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS
12. When prompted where to extract the file to, do NOT choose to extract to the default location, or you may get a message on bootup stating that the file cannot be replaced. Instead, extract the file directly to C:\
13. Restart your system normally
14. After startup, Open "My Computer\C:\SYSTEM\SETUPAPI.DLL". Delete the file that is there, and then Cut and Paste the file you saved to C in the same folder(C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM)
The final step is replacing the file "CFGMGR32.DLL". Replacing this file is the same as replacing BATMETER.DLL, except replace the BATMETER.DLL references in 1-6 above with CFGMGR32.DLL. Perform Steps 1-6 above.
Reboot your system, and it should be okay (the error message should be gone, and the speaker should be back on the toolbar).
Pls note that if you get the BATMETER.DLL error message, it may stop your system from recognizing one or more of your USB ports. The reason why I worked my way into this fix was that I could not get my USB scanner (HP ScanJet 3300e) to install because the system could not find my USB ports (besides the one my USB mouse was using).
I could live without the speaker icon, but I had to have the scanner.
