UNSOLVED
Sound Problem.
Hi i just recently reinstalled my windows xp and i was having trouble getting sound back none of the cd's have multimedia audio controller software that i suspect i may need... I have sound but when i play my online games the sound is distorted and not the same since the reinstillation. Anyone have any idea where i can try to download something or fiddle around with my sounds options ive checked dell drivers and downloads and i havnt come up with any solution thx.

Ya ive downloaded that i have sound.. But in my Online game its distorted. ive checked the sound settings on the game and everythings default like before.208

Here is the 4600 download page. If you have integrated audio in the computer use the Audio section ADI driver. If you have a soundcard try the appropriate driver.208

Did you install the chipset driver right after reinstalling XP and before installing the video driver, followed by the audio driver, and then any other drivers?

No, just install the chipset driver and see what happens. You do not have to reinstall windows.208

Here's link to chipset driver for Dimension 4600 (I don't know if 4600C uses same one) so make sure you get the right one for your model:

The correct reinstallation order is:
XP
chipset driver
video driver
audio driver
other drivers
All downloads can be found by hovering mouse over "Product Support" box in upper lefthand corner of any Dell forum page and selecting Drivers&Downloads. Enter either your system model or service tag number on next page and you'll get to the list of available downloads.

lol.. thx for the help guys ive called dell and had them walk me through it and download other items and still no result new sound card only hope now :smileysad:39

Be odd coincidence if sound card failed when you did XP reinstall. Assuming you installed the chipset driver, go into Device Manager and uninstall the sound card. Then go into Add/Remove Programs and delete sound card drivers. You may also want to grab free Driver Cleaner 3 from www.omegadrivers.com and run that after deleting sound card driver to get rid of the bits that get left behind. Reboot and let XP redetect the hardware and point it at downloaded audio driver or audio driver CD.
If that doesn't work, you may want to reformat/reinstall XP again, and load all the drivers in correct sequence. Cheaper than buying new sound card until you're sure you need one.
