SX270, small form factor, weird locking/blowing behavior

Question

Hi all, I've seen a number of posts re: small form factor Optiplexes and power supply/heat woes, but nobody with the exact same problem I'm seeing, so I thought I'd bounce it against the groups.   This is an optiplex SX270, small form factor, winXP/Sp2 - that will occasionally boot with a solid amber light, the screen stays blank, and the fan blows at maximum. No HD activity or anything else, just a fast-blowing fan and the solid amber light.   A quick reboot will not fix this, nor will yanking the plug for a minute or two. Yanking the plug for an extended period of time (10-20 mins) fixes the problem and then the system boots normally.   Anybody?

and what about the external power adapter? Does it get uncomfortably hot?

hmmm.... Does it act this way when starting cold? Or do you always get a good boot (fans spinning) in the morning?

I'll check all of these out on monday. We had one other machine, not an sx270, with bad mobo capacitors, but they were ordered roughly at the same time so this could be possible.   Back on monday with info. Message Edited by bhance on 11-07-2004 05:42 PM

Usually the solid amber light will indicate a mb problem. Sometimes a reseat of the cpu and memory will fix the problem. Could possibly also be a faulty cpu. Apparently a lot of the SX270s had faulty capacitors on the mb which would swell, perhaps this is your problem?

What happen? I believe this may be a board or proc going bad. If it is "THE" Motherboard issue you will have leaking capacitors on the board and will be easily noticed. A white substance all over the board and capacitors will be blown out, like a fire cracker. Swap with another power supply to check, but I dont think thats it.
