AMD
It would be nice if there would be an AMD model. Something like an FX or X2 proc. No point in using an Opteron as the X2 kills the Optys. Please please I beg that there be an AMD edition! haha

In MaximumPC they stated that Dell will be selling AMD but only the proc; not in a system. Hopefully this will be the start of them selling AMD. Dell is a "big boy" they can stand up to the Intel bully and sell some good competition which would do them some good if you ask me. AMD is royally kicking Intels @$$ with the X2 procs.SCBookworm

I'll believe Maximum PC's claim when i see it. These are also the people (if i remembre correctly) who said that the new alliance race for WoW: Burning Crusade was the Pandaren and Blizzard has flatly stated that is not true. Max PC maybe right but again, I'll believe it when i see it.- I think we can safely say that the first AMD chip at Dell would not be in any mobile line. If Dell does use AMD it will be the Opterons in their server class, because that is where they are taking flak for it. The consumer doesn't really care that much. AMD has awesome chips but their mobile line still isn't there, although the Turion does look very nice.

The consumer doesn't really care?!? Man, the X2 is the best proc out there for anything hands down. It's been proven to take down any P4 you put it up against. As for mobile, I run a desktop Athlon 64 in my Compaq laptop and I'm looking at picking up an X2 proc and slappin it in here. By the way, a lot of people I know (and that I've seen on message forums) don't use these things as a "laptop" when you get one larger then 17", we use them as "portable desktops". With this concept "laptop" being 20.1" I can't see people caring if it has a "mobile" proc or not. If you use your "laptop" without plug-in power then yes, run the Pentium D but otherwise, for us gamers and mobile users AMD would be ideal, in my opinion.Tyrian2000

the Turions are nice. But battery life isn't a concern here. Obviously, powering a 20.1 inch LCD it basically won't run without being plugged in. LCDs are the biggest single energy expenditure for a laptop as running the backlight costs watts. So slap an X2 in there. Intel procs (desktop anyway, the Pentium M and CoreDuo's are good processors) generate a lot of heat and use a lot of energy, all for less performance than from an AMD of similar status. Plus the on-die dual-channel memory controller helps for multimedia applications. Until DDR2 picks up in speed, good low latancy DDR1 still is faster, so that is moot point.MacDaddy05

I strongly disagree the X2 stomps any Intel, you are comparing a P4 to a Dual Core chip, the P4 is a single core chip, and most people who compare the P4 to a X2 are comparing a P4 WITHOUT HT. Now if you compare a Etreme Edition Dual core chip (Dual core and has HT) it will stomp the X2 especially the overclocked one that's going to be in the Dell XPS 600 Renegade. The EE chip is pretty much a chip with four cores since it has HT, so as I stated above I don't think the X2 dominates all Intel chips, the Pentium D chip could probably keep up with a X2 if tweeked a little bit.

comparing the X2 to intels top processor is funny. Does it really take a 1,300$ processor to beat one costing half that? If you must compare an EE to something, compare it to an FX-60, which is AMD's 1,300$ processor. Then you'll have a fair comparison. Where did you get your information that most benchmarks are done without HT? Seems kinda fuzzy logic to me.
Umm P4's do have duel core procs... they benched them against the X2 and the X2 spanks Intel... the X2 also was nose to nose with the new FX-60...MacDaddy05

A month ago I looked at a lot of websites that compared P4's to AMD 64 & AMD X2's, and 9 out of 10 they were P4 without HT. Sorry but I dont remember the websites.Message Edited by MacDaddy05 on 02-12-2006 06:34 PM
