D810 Power Considerations

Considering a Dell D810:

Incl will be WSXGA+ or WUXGA screen
60G 7200 rpm drive
1GB DDRII
128MB video card
Wireless
1 9 cell battery and one extra 6 cell modular bay battery

I'm concerned that the power consumption will be too much as all of these options are large consumers.  I'm not too concerned about how long the battery lasts as I will have two, but more about how hot the keyboard and desk (or my lap) will get.

Comments.  Any experience with such a notebook?

D810
512MB, ATI 128MB, 60GB 7.2KRPM, Wireless&Bluetooth

Isnt it better to have 2 batteries instead of 1 battery and 1 modular battery?? Anywyz...i had my laptop on for like...4-5hrs on AC power (installing software and playing games)..and the keyboard was ok...warm if you want...as for the desk(in my case..a box =p) was abit hot...since i was done and was putting it back on my hiding place ...i had2hold it right..so...its not hot enough to do any harm to ur lap =)

Thanks, Chris.  I had heard that the 7200 rpm disk tends to be hot but now two sources have not reported any large power problems at all.  My thought on two batteries was to charge both of them at the same time, which is a question I should ask.  Often on my present LT, I find that the other battery is not charged when I need it most.  With the additional power consumers in this LT, I thought I could use the extra battery.

Smooth,

I should mention that I had ordered the 5400RPM version of the 60GB HD due to reports (prior
to August 2004) of noise from the 7200RPM drives.

Um...were you referring to me??i listed the specs i had since you were looking for someone that also had D810. As far as noises, my laptops rather quiet...quiter than my desktop...the only sound it makes (while the speakers are off) is when its reading/burning a cd.

Whoops!  Sorry Chris, read your specs and responded to Art.  MSA.

Glad you did respond about the noise, however, since Art mentioned this.  I know some disks "tick" when they are accessing data and it bothers users some.  I have heard that certain mfg access disks differently (Fujitsu) and they don't tick.  I believe you can ask Dell about this when ordering to make sure you don't get one.

>.< ..what do you mean???

um...my 7.2K disk isnt noisy...its rather quiet...maybe its become better since 2004. Anywyz, if not connected, your looking at 3-5hrs with a abit dark screen and if your only listening to music and small applications. with games and movies..it tends to become 2-3hrs. oya..i only got 1 battery :P. Have you bought it?its good...rather big..but i dont plan on carrying it all the time anyways.

Chris,

It's my first LT in six or seven years so I hope I didn't overdo it.  It arrives today so we'll see.  I do carry it every day back and forth, but I work on it so much that I thought I needed the large screen and avoid a DT monitor.  It would probably strain my neck, anyway, looking up and down.  Easier to just look down and type on the NB DT since both my desks have extensions, by plan.

Anyway:
2Ghz
7200 60G
1MB
X600 graphics
DVD
9 and 6 cell batteries
docking

Most of the time I'll be on AC and connected to the internet with full brightness.  Basically, a DT equiv.  Do some SW development on my accounting DB but mostly email, browse, etc.  Usually, have many apps open at once using multiple sources of data including linking to work when working at home.
