Yes mine does the same thing, i have just got it back from Dell where it was supposedly having a service!! They replaced the 'Palmrest'??!!

When i have had the laptop on for a long period of time i am unable to write emails as the cursor goes crazy! I opened up the back and the thermal cooling assembly is burnt black!!! They obviously didn't even look inside the computer!!!!

Odd  way to service a Laptop!!

Your Graphics card is probably heating up your computer. ATI graphics cards are far worst than nvidia. Nvdia is the best Graphics company right now. ATI doesnt have good quality. My cousins ATI graphics burnt out but he didnt do stuff that intensive.

This is really OT but your post fails.

1) you are way behind the times, the 48xx series graphics cards are cheaper and outperform the nvidia 2xx series

2) The video chipset is nowhere near the palm rest in the studio laptops, its near the back.

Hi, I have the same problem, and after a time it is quite annoying. The solution that I use it is put an external palm rest over the laptop.

To update the situation i have just got mine back from 'number 2' service wherein it had the motherboard, heatsink and palmrest replaced.

But it is still not functioning properly-ie after having on for a few hours the cursor starts behaving erratically again. I think it is a design fault myself related to heat. It does the same thing in safemode so it has to be a hardware problem.

you are describing my problem, and the heat problem (at least in my laptop) are the sodimm modules. I made some memory test, and move big files, something that need use of ram, and check an increase of heat in the palmrest, it is not related with harddisk (it's in the right side of the palm rest).

I follow the recommendation of technical support and interchanged the sodimm modules, and the heat decrease.

The slot that is closer to the video card has more space.The other slot is so close that the memory module touches with the motherboard and is transferred around the heat, and this is the problem.

So I talked again with dell techinal support, and they are going to change one of the sodimm modules.

With less heat the touchpad start to work correcty.

In my humble opinion this sodimm need an external heatsink,a copper or aluminum foil on the chips to dissipate heat better.
