E1505 doesn't suspend until I *OPEN* the screen

I have an Inspiron E1505 (Core Duo 1.8ghz, 2gb RAM, XP Media Center).  A few months ago, it developed a problem where I would close the screen and it would stay on.  Then, when I opened the screen back up (after it had been baking in my laptop bag all morning), it would finally suspend.   Earlier this month, I ordered a bigger hard drive and reinstalled my operating system on the new drive.  Everything was fine until yesterday, when this problem started up again.   Windows' Event Viewer doesn't show anything odd when this happens.   I'm out of warranty, and really dread having to pay for tech support on this.  Any ideas?

Just when I was about to give up and order a new laptop...during that two-minutes-to-midnight haze where your mind is still awake but it's not quite thinking straight...it hit me. I spent most of the night looking for info on this, and one site mentioned that the trigger for going into standby is under the right hinge. The right hinge was the first to go on my Inspiron 1100...what if it's starting to die on my E1505, too? I closed the lid and fiddled with the hinge cover. After some massaging, the hard drive sprang to life and then all was silent, with the calm pulsing of the power LED telling me my E1505 was in standby. I opened the lid, and it resumed normally. I closed the lid again, and it worked. Opened it...you get the idea. I'm glad I was able to solve it, but it still bothers me that I might have this kind of problem. Does anyone know of a more permanent fix?
