Can't access internet thru network

I have a network in my home using Mac computers (2). I needed to buy a PC for internet schooling. I bought a Dell Latitude and a Linksys WPC54G notebook adapter. I set up the notebook adapter, get a connection with good signal strength but cannot access the internet. I am using Windows XP Pro and have called Linksys with no help. I don't have a network bridge and don't appear to have a firewall. Any suggestions would be appreciated, I have visited several support sites but haven't found the answer. Thanks.

OK, next...
When I try to manually edit the settings in my Linksys monitor and enter my passphrase or WEP password it automatically puts the hex in for 128 bit (which is what I have the Airport set to). Checking the hex number in Airport utility it gives me a different one. I hope you are following this because I'm not sure I am. The hex numbers do not match but the passphrases do. I have had enough for one day and appreciate all you have done Jim. The Linksys router idea may be an last resort though I never could get it set up with my Mac's.
I need some sleep.........

OK, now we're getting close. You need to enter the HEX values from the AirPort utility into the Linksys client on the laptop. The reason the passphrase isn't working is that every vendor has a different way of generating WEP keys from passphrases. But, if you enter the HEX key values directly, I'll bet you'll be up and running.

Yep, it's been a long day...

Mark,

I finally found some information about that obscure configuration entry. It just means that the gateway address that will be given to AirPort clients is 10.0.1.1. But that raises another question - what device is the AirPort itself connected to on the WAN side?

Mark, I completely understand your reaction to this frustrating situation. Mac OSX in particular brought a higher degree of reliability to the Mac world without sacrificing the ease of use that's always been the great strength of MacOS. Great care has always been taken to the  "Human Interface Guidelines" for software developers to assure that things that should behave consistently (and understandably!) indeed behave that way.

Having said all that, this situation was made harder by difficulty locating good technical documentation on the AirPort Extreme. It should have been as easy as getting your old Linksys to work, but even knowing the meaning of some of the language used in the AirPort Admin tool was extremely difficult! I'm sure there's a way of transferring the WEP and SSID settings to the Linksys client software on the PC, but the details were elusive.

In any case, thanks for your help in trying to find our way through this thicket!

Jim,

Thanks for all your help. I have given up and decided to return the wireless card and just connect directly through my Airport Extreme. I now remember why I left the PC world and went to Apple. They know how to make products that are user friendly and create an environment of enjoyment and not frustration. I have never had a problem with 3 Apple computers I have had over the last 2 years and have a PC for a few days and already can't use it properly. Hopefully the PC world (95% of the market) will draw more people like you and make the neccessary changes to create products that the owner does not need a degree in computer programming to run. I will continue to study the problem and, who knows, may get an answer some day. Have a great day.

rashmi31,

Try reading...

Software Updates Causes Wireless Connectivity Issue Or Unable to Connect to Internet

If the article does not help solve the problem, Can you run Finding System Information REMOVE YOUR PRODUCT ID, if using XP, run an ipconfig /all log and post it back here.

Also include the virus program and firewall you're using.
