Dimension XPSR400 - Error 1006 - Modem resources conflict

Hi, can anyone help please
I have a Dimension XPSR400 (10 years old) until recently all has been working fine however, the PC got slower and slower until it stopped - just froze. Decided to reinstall W98, all went well until tried to connect to internet and got "Error 1006 - modem resouce conflict with another hardware, please change configuration". I have checked in device manager and there are no conflict indicators. Have loaded modem drivers (3Com US Robotics v.90 56k) but no joy. Where do I go from here. All other hardware is working OK. Many thanks Keith

watts24240,

If there is a resource conflict, you may be able to clear NVRAM to resolve the conflict.  Uninstall drivers for your peripherals and remove them from the system (modem, sound card if possible, network card, etc..).  Leave the video card installed.  Power the system down, and open the case.  Move the config jumper on the motherboard to pins 2 and 3 to enter maintenance mode.  Check thsi link for more info:

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dkhan/Jumpers.htm

Restart the system and enter system setup (BIOS).  Arrow to the Exit screen and arrow down to Load Setup Defaults and press Enter.  Press F10 and then Enter.  Shut the system down and return the maintenance jumper to it's normal position.  Restart the computer, go into system setup and reserve IRQ5 (if not already reserved) on the Advanced screen -> Resource Configuration menu.  Shut down and install the sound card.  Restart and install the sound card driver.  Shut down and reinstall your modem.  Restart the computer and instlal your modem driver and any other drivers that you may need.
