I don't know where you are getting your information, but normally routers are placed near the broadband modem and both are placed near computers.  Your desktop should connect to the router by a wired ethernet cable, so it has to be pretty close.

There may be some potential EMI from some CRT monitors and TVs that might interact with some routers if they are too close, but a few inches away from a CRT monitor or a foot and a half (eighteen inches) away from a TV should be safe for most devices. If I was a little more ambitious I might run some DSL speed tests while inching my wireless router closer and closer to the TV to see if and at what distance it might have an impact, but I suspect it would require a proximity measured in a very few inches, if at all. Maybe you can run a test and update this post when you get set up? Here are a few sites to run speed tests. You may notice some variability in speed and consistency with these tests, but find one that is stable in reporting your speed and then vary the distance between the router and the monitor to see if you can detect an impact to the wireless connection with your notebook. (If you're using an LCD monitor on your desktop don't even bother.)
