Open Device Manager.  Are there any devices listed there as "Problem Devices"?  If so, which ones?  Do you have any USB devices (besides a mouse and/or keyboard) plugged into USB ports?  If so, unplug those devices until after you have installed the drivers.

You did not state what pc model you were using, but I had a similar problem when I had to wipe my hard drive and start over. If you have the Dell server tag number for your system, and access to the internet, you can download the correct ethernet driver in file form, copy it onto a cd and load it to your computer. Each manufactor of most programs requiring drivers will have a website where a required driver can be downloaded at no cost.Hope this helps.
