USB adapter crash in Vista bluescreen

I bought a dell machine with preinstalled vista home premium (with no wireless). I have a SMC USB wireless adapter which i used on my laptop running win2k.

After i upgrade to win2k SP4, I was having issues with bluescreen in the win2k machine, stop error 0x00000007c whenever i plug in my usb adapter into the win2k machine. then i check ard and perhaps due to the WZC that win2k sp4 now has. I change the service to automatic and start the service. Install the usb adapter utility and driver. When plug in the adapter, bluescreen. Next, i stop the service, change to manual/disabled start. Install the adapter/driver, it works.

So i tot perhaps in my new dell vista home premium machine, (they have a service WLAN autoconfig) i may have to stop the service. Initially i tried without changing anything. Install the utility/driver, once plug in, vista crash, same error. I then change the service to disable/stop it and install the driver and plug in. It is able to connect. However, the utility is not able to start and recognize its own usb adapter..i guess perhaps the utility not able to work in vista.

Since the adapter now can connect in vista, i tried to locate my own secured network to connect, but vista not able to find any network..when click 'help or something..' vista message says fault due to wireless service not started', i chose start the service,...crash... without the ability to find network, connect, enter WEP etc, cant really use..

i got the memory dump file but well, its alien to me.

Is it cos of compatible issues with the usb driver with vista wLAN service (Without the windows wireless utility, able to connect), the utility not able to work in vista for the dell machine?

If yes, then why for the win2k machine, with the windows WZC on, crash still?

To me, it seems either use third party utility or use windows wireless utility. but both vista and win2k when start the wireless service cause it to crash even when not using third party..

any clue before i need to purchase a new wireless adapter for my dell machine?
