PE2650: Beeps every four seconds.

I have a PowerEdge 2650 server with a PowerVault 220S attached. The server is running NetWare 6.5 SP7. The server has taken to beeping every four seconds . . . hour after hour after hour . . . non-stop, persistently, unfaltering, consistently, unrelenting, resolutely.

Get my drift?

All status lights on the 2650 and 220S are either blue or green. None are flashing; none are amber; none are red. All lights that should be on are on; all lights that should be off are off.

The server seems to be working fine: it's talking on the network, the fans are humming, the drives are whirring, users are happily accessing files. It's like something out of a Disney movie; except for the beeping, that seems to be from an H.P. Lovecraft story.

There are no error messages on the NetWare console or log files. I disabled the NetWare "Sound Bell for Alerts" value, and the beeping continued. So, I'm figuring it's a system error of some type.

I've gone through the manuals for the 2650 and 220S. There are beep codes in the 2650 manual, but this specific situation isn't covered.

I'm going to schedule time to reboot the after hours.

I'm just wondering if anyone has come across this problem. What can I expect? Pain and misery? Tinnitus? Cthulu, perhaps?

    actually check via OMSA, you may not get an amber light on the disk but OMSA will tell you whats going on!

    this may be a perc alarm & somethings is probably wrong with your disks.  have you checked the 220S? (flashing amber lights on the disks?)

    mat_a,

    You may have hit the nail on the head. I checked the array being managed by the server's PERC 3/DC controller. Recent messages are:

    (1) 11/11/2008; 11:00:08 AM; PERC 3/DC Controller 0,Array Disk 0:0 removed;

    (2) 11/11/2008; 11:00:08 AM; PERC 3/DC Controller 0,Array Disk 0:5 rebuild started;

    (3) 11/11/2008; 11:00:10 AM; PERC 3/DC Controller 0,Virtual Disk (Virtual Disk 0) degraded; and

    (4) 11/12/2008; 4:12:16 AM; PERC 3/DC Controller 0,Array Disk 0:5 rebuild completed.

    It appears that disk 0:0 failed and the hot spare--disk 0:5--kicked in.

    A reboot did make the beeping stop, but now I know to take care of the drive issue.

    Thanks much.
