How to prepare replacement RAID5 disk

Hi,

One of my RAID5 hard disks failed. The status is Critical and Failed Redundancy. I got replacement for it from Dell.

I replaced the failed HDD with new.

RAID controller PERC 3/Si is not rebuilding virtual disk to new disk, to get rid of Failed redundancy error.

Has the HDD to be prepared specialy to rebuild the virtual disk?

Does anyone can help. Is these newsgroup monitored by any technichian?

And, no, these pages can not be monitored by Dell technicians, but maybe occationally read. It seems like they only answer easy questions, and don't solve real heavy problems.

I don't know the spesific controller, but on 3/Di you may have to initialize disk (not array or container!!) before it can be used. The status of the disk should change from Failed to Ready.

On some older controllers you had to choose a Rebuild command to initiate rebuild after replacing a failed disk, but that was in the BIOS Config Utility. Isn't it a description in the User guide or Online-Help-file?

1) Remove all disks except the replacement
2) Initialize the new drive and shut down server
3) Replace all drives and power up server

RAID controller should see new drive and start rebuilding volume.
