Dell 3115cn paper trays

I have a 3115cn and one of the 550 paper trays. I use plain paper and letterhead. I originally had the plain paper in tray one and the letterhead in tray 2 but when tray one is out of paper it goes straight to tray 2. So, I've moved the plain paper to tray 2 which is where it should be anyway since it holds much more paper and the majority of my printing is from plain paper. Is there a way to configure tray two as the auto instead of it using tray one and can you have the printer stop printing when a tray is out of paper instead of going from one tray to another?

I have the exact opposite problem.

I want my MPF and Tray 1 linked so that it takes sheets from the MFP first, then when that runs out it takes sheets from Tray 1 second. I just can't get it to behave like that, which is what my old HP LaserJet 6MP would do.

I want to insert a single sheet of headed notepaper in the MPF and have the printer take that sheet from there, and the rest of the job from Tray 1, but it won't. It either takes the whole lot from Tray 1 when set to Auto; or if set to MPF it wants to take the whole lot from the MPF and demands refilling after the single headed sheet has gone through.

The manual says that if the paper sizes and types are set the same the trays are supposed to be automatically linked, and although I've set that up so they are the same (confirmed by viewing via the web, and a restart), the feature doesn't work.
