System shuts off after loading main screen.

I have a Latitude D600 with XP.  One day it just auto shut down.  It boots up to the main screen then after 5 seconds, it shuts down.  I tried re-installing the recovery disk.  During the "Finding Devices" section, it shut down.  I next installed a Dell recovery of Win2000 and everything worked fine, and it seemed all the on board devices were found (after downloading the drivers from Dell).  I formated the HD and started over with the XP re-install disk again.  I ran into the same problem.  After powering up 5 or 6 times during the install, it finally made it through.  Again, the system shuts down after the main screen has loaded.  The system runs in safemode so I was able to update the drives through the Dell website.  I can't update Windows because my screen in safemode won't support the website, "can not display the page".  Next I used an older XP SP2 disk and installed it under safemode.  Same problem.  I'm guessing it's a driver problem.  If everything works with Win2000, then I'm assuming the hardware is good.

I am dual booting with win2000 until I can find some answers.  I have tried booting with AC no battery, only battery, I upgraded the BIOS, I tried a different HD.  I took all the hardware off.  I even opened it up to make sure everthing was still connected.  Any suggestions?

*** I found that if I kept the HD doing tasks, the system doesn't shut down.  When the main screen loads up, I can do a quick defrag or disk scan and the system doesn't shut off until 10 seconds after it's completed.?.?
