In response to a recent inquiry about this scanner, I downloaded and ran a test scan.

 

Norman Malware Cleaner is a free standalone utility that claims to:

 

-kill running processes that are infected
-remove infections from disk (including ActiveX components and browser helper objects)
-reveal and remove rootkits
-restore correct registry values
-remove references created by malware in hosts file

Listed at this site are 38 specific malicious malware (all variants) targeted.

 

My results and thoughts:

 

- It is a simple scanner, with a clean user interface, and nothing to configure except which drive(s) to scan.
- No evidence of rogue activity.
- No readme or help files, nor dedicated user forum support.
- No way to update from within the utility.

 

A scan took about 20 minutes (~100,000 files scanned).
No infections detected (not surprisingly).
No false positives. It did not detect any of the sham threats created by Malware Immunizer.

 

However, it did silently remove all entries from my MVPS Hosts file (these were not "references created by malware", but legitimate entries made to prevent infection). For me, this was a deal-breaker.

 

Conclusions:
1) This is a legitimate utility, free of malware.
2) It *may* be of some use to clean specific malware detected by other apps (eg: HJT).
3) For those using a Hosts file, be aware that this utility will erase all entries in it.
