Serious Spyware Problem

I've gotten help with my Hijackthis log, but it keeps coming back.  Winpatrol detects something called replace module trying to load itself.  When this happens my homepage is changed, a folder called inetdata keeps being installed, and Winpatrol also detects something called xp_system and run in the list of start up programs.  this thing keeps coming back even after I fix the items in my hijackthis log.

    Fakeandy,

We're these the lines you fixed before?

    • C:\WINDOWS\inetdata\winlogon.exe
    • F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\inetdata\winlogon.exe
    • R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.searchportal.info/10039/
    • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5321E378-FFAD-4999-8C62-03CA8155F0B3} - (no file)
    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [xp_system] C:\WINDOWS\inetdata\winlogon.exe
    • O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [xp_system] C:\WINDOWS\inetdata\winlogon.exe

I'm assuming the search portal wasn't what you intentionally installed onto your pc?

Before I attempt to write up a solution for you, have you tried the following:

    • Running HiJackThis from "Safe Mode", checking to see if that particular process is running, ending, it, then proceding to 'fix' the above entries?
    • Booting up into the recovery console, deleteing C:\WINDOWS\inetdata\winlogon.exe, then rebooting your computer and fixing the entry(s) with HiJackThis?
    • Using HiJackThis to delete that file on next reboot?

This will help to give me some more information about what you have and haven't tried to remove this problem.

    Mike.

Edits: Added one addition 'delete' on reboot option.

Here's the most recent one where I deleted all the stuff you said, but I am sure that tomorrow I'll be bombarded by a bunch of spyware.  It keeps coming back

    fakeandy,

Ok, if the entry(s) are the same, without any additional ones, let's try the following before we attempt to fix them with HiJackThis.

First, let's go to www.trendmicro.com, then click " Free Online Scan". It will take a few minutes to download and install. When it's done, select all available drives, then click " Scan".

Next, download, install and run the " A squared 2" anti-trojan software. Be sure to update any new trojan signatures before beginning each scan.

Locate the following running processes, and end them, if  present:

    • winlogon.exe

Make sure you end the correct process since one of them running will be good, and should be left alone.

    Next, run HiJackThis, then:

    • Click "Config"
    • Click "Misc Tools"
    • Click "Delete a file on reboot..."
    • Browse, and locate C:\WINDOWS\inetdata\winlogon.exe

    Reboot your computer.

Locate all locations of "winlogon". If any are in "recycler", flush out the garbage can. If any reside in "system_volume", reset your system restore points.

Run "Disk Cleanup" and allow it to remove anything that it finds.

Post back a new log if the problem re-occurs.

    Mike.
