Virus Removal

My first time posting.  I have the following problem(s).  My AVG antivirus program has identified a Trojan Backdoor which it cannot do anything with because it has attached to a DLL file in Windows (I have Windows XP Home)  Microsoft Anti Spyware Beta shows nothing.  I don't know if this is related but I am unable to run any software: I get an error message stating it cannot execute any software because it cannot access the MFC42.dll file.  Therefore I can't get on the internet because I can't run Juno.  When I was able to get on I couldn't access the Internet because Windows would not recognize my modem, and I was unable to get anywhere with that.  I need to get rid of the trojan but it looks like getting any more scans or software is not an option because I can't access the Internet or run any software from a CD.  What am I dealing with here?  Any suggestions are appreciated.

I tried running in safe mode and neither the AVG or the Microsoft AntiSpyware picked up the trojan.  AVG picked up Backdoor BA when I ran it again in regular mode but can't remove it

But it gets worse.  When I rebooted I got a message saying that my SYSTEM/CONFIG files were corrupted and it advised me to do a repair of Windows.  I tried that but after it copied the setup files it couldn't restart Windows.  I got a blue screen saying that "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer"  It identified the problem as PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON-PAGED_AREA and advised me to check and if necessary remove any newly installed hardware or software.  When I reboot from the hard drive all I get is a dark screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner.

Is there anything I can do or do I need to throw in the towel and reformat?  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks.

Try booting from the XP cd and instead of choosing set-up select R and load the recovery console. Type chkdsk /r at the prompt and let it run through.
