Cannot Install service pack 2

I have been trying to install the Service Pack 2, but it gets about half way through it and the a prompt comes up saying "Service Pack 2 setup error. SP2 setup could not backup Registry Key." And then I get something like 21 prompts that start with HKCR\DxDiag...,HKCR\DirectPlay..., HKCR\Software..., HKCR\Psisdecd...and the only other odd ball one is C:\windows\$NTServicePackUninstall$\reg00190.
To be honest, I have no idea what is going on, and I have even tried to restore my Puter to an earlier date, and still, nothing. Can someone help me please figure this out. This is really bugging me. By the way, I have a Dimension 4400, and I am running XP.
Please help.
Juan

    Dear Juan,

out of experience and after having read the forum today - if you have a firewall, antivirus, spamfilters, ad-aware or other software already, you do not really need SP2.

Currenly looks like SP2 is causing too many problems to be worth while installing. Read what SP2 is all about and decide if you want it.

But of course this is just my humble oppinion.
