CD-R/RW - Drag and Drop Issue
Dell 8400 w/ Samsung CD-R/RW and Phillips DVD +/-RW drives.
I can't drag and drop files to these drives using Windows Explorer. I get a error message that "Invalid Function: Drive Not Available" This is using brand new CD-R and DVD disks. Have tried several new disks to make sure the disks are not bad. The drives will both read existing CD & DVD. I can burn music selections to these drives using 3rd party software (MusicMatch). I can copy data files to these drives using 3rd party software (Nero). The drives will read disks correctly. I simply can't drag and drop files to a blank disk using Windows Explorer. Dell service center says I have no hardware issues. All diagnostic checks I have run are OK. Have not installed any software or hardware lately with the exception of automatic updates from Microsoft. Have defragmented the hard drives. Running Windows XP Home SP2. I do not copy files to CDs everyday but this is a recent problem, say 1 week. Suggestions welcome.

XP`s built in program will not work with DVD media. Check the properties of the drive and make sure there is a check mark in the box to enable CD recording for the device.

You said you were using Nero to copy files to CDs. If you are using CD-R/W disks, and you have Nero's InCD program installed and active, you should be able to drag and drop with no problem. Be advised that you must indicate when ejecting the CD-R/W whether you want the disk to be readable in other CD drives. Roxio Easy Media Creator has a drag and drop function also.

Add/Remove Programs
Remove any Sonic DLA or any other DLA software. This should fix it.
