installing vista

i have a dell dimension 8400. its a p4 3ghz with 2 gb mem, and a 250 gb hd. my problem is the cdrom is set as the boot drive. ineed to make the dvd drive the boot drive. will switching the controller cables be sufficient to boot from the dvd drive? will it show up in the bios?

    A quicker option is to change the boot device order from the BIOS. You can set up a priority so that the system boots from the DVD drive first. However, I have found that if you insert the Windows Vista DVD while in XP and then restart, it automatically gives you an option to boot from the DVD - so you do not need to change any BIOS settings.

    Forget going into the BIOS, hit F12 at bootup and select the CD Drive as a one time first boot option.

    I have found that even if you hit F12 and select to boot from the CD drive, if You have 2 CD drives with the DVD drive being your slave drive it will not boot from the DVD drive unless you disable the first CD drive in the BIios and then hit F 12 and select to boot from the CD drive.  Saying that I installed Vista while in Windows XP and did a clean install on my second Hard drive so I can dual boot.
