Internet connection problem

My computer running windows XP will not connect to the internet. It is

fed through a D-link router and a D-link modem. My second computer is

also a Dell running Windows 98. This computer is also fed from the same

D-link router, however, it receives the internet connection just fine. I

tried eliminating the router and fed the RJ-45 cable to the problem

computer directly from the D-link modem, still no luck. This seemed to

eliminate any problem with the router. I also tried releasing and

renewing the IP address, no luck. The icon on the problem computer shows that the high speed connection is present.

    Did you try swapping the cables?

    If you have a firewall (and you should) is the firewall set to allow internet access to the browser and e-mail?

    I've also found that with most router setups, you have to install the router vendor's setup software to get the system working.  e.g. I have a Linksys wired router and the Linksys setup software had to be used to get my Windows XP systems to communicate with the router and access the internet.  I recently setup a wireless system for a customer (a Motorola wireless system) and I had to use the Motorola setup software to get those systems going.

    Firebird, I agree, this is probably a firewall issue. However, I have never needed to install anything on the computer to get the router (Linksys) working. Just need to make sure it's set to acquire an IP automatically.

    My experience too has been that problems setting up a network most often are firewall related. For me the easiest solution has been to disable ALL firewalls or even uninstall third party firewalls such as Zone Alarm or Sygate and re-boot. Then after getting the network going I re-install the firewall.
