I have no problems updating the Java in my computer. I get my Java from here. I have all of Windows Updates, even the recommended ones. I also use Update Checker to update my other programs. I never had any good results using Comando on my computer. Last time I tried it, I had to reformat my computer. I use Zone Alarm for my firewall. I would check your security to see it the problem is there, if the above programs do not work.

I this morning installed the Java 6 update 5.

I was in non-administrator's account [my son's] and tried to install no luck. After trying for few times, restarted the computer by logging off and the logged on --

 

Then I logged on in the account with the administrator's rights.

Went to the Java,s site and clicked to download.[I clicked not to install google]

It went smoothly. I did not do anything with the virus scan. Mine is McAfee

Start your download late at night.  Go to safe mode with networking and try your download/install again.  Be sure you are the administrator.

Thanks for the suggestions. The Filehippo Update Checker said that I need to download NET. Framework version 2.0.50207 first...whatever that does. I'll try that first and then follow the other suggestions about the Java download.

I seem to have good luck witht the Comodo firewall, other than those pesky alerts. Almost everything else downloads without problems except Java. But will keep working on it.

the .NET framework is a 23.61 MB download.... if you don't need it for anything else, it seems "nuts" to have to download it solely for the sake of being able to run FileHippo's Update Checker (which is still in Beta).

i wasn't thinking that you needed Java installed in order to run the online secunia scanner.

 

on the other hand, if you indeed had JRE 6 update 3 installed properly, as I believe you're saying, that should have sufficed to do the online scan (first secunia link).   So I have to wonder if it's really there... or if it's just a "figment"??

 

how about the downloadable Personal Secunia Scanner (2nd secunia link)?   did you try that one?   after scanning --- if it doesn't find/report java automatically --- you should find java listed under either

the 1st tab [INsecure product], if it's not up-to-date, or

the 4th tab [patched products] if it's up-to-date.

Tried to download the Secunia, but when I tried that I get the error message that says that I don't have "Sun Java" installed :smileyindifferent: LOL! Guess it isn't happy with update 3...which I show as having in Add/Remove Programs and having its own folder in the Control Panel. At this point not sure why I wanted to install Update 5 to begin with. Anyway...still don't have 5 yet, haven't had time the last couple days, but will keep grinding away till I get it done.  

by the way, the reason why you want to update java from build 3 to 5, is that security flaws have been discovered [and publicized] in build 3 (as well as in build 4), and these [known flaws] are corrected in build 5.

Stress on "known" flaws:  that's not to say 5 is inherently safe... just safeR... but odds are that it will be exploited soon enough :smileymad:

As an aside, some of the updates suggested by hippo can cause disasters.  JAVA needs an update because of security issues, but in general, "if it ain't broke (sic) don't fix it."  If you do update, provide a Restore point first.

Allrighty then...time for an update.

 

Forgot to mention previously that I pushed on forward through the Sun Java message on the first link then got to the point where I could push Start. Down near where it says  Status/Currently Processing there was sort of a sidebar saying "There might be problems loading the Java Applet in your browser" I let it sit there for a good five minutes or more then finally gave up.

 

Now all this above is going in my Internet portal, MSN Explorer. When I pulled up the regular Internet Explorer in another window I got a bunch of the "This program can't pull up the web page" type error messages when I tried to pull up some other sites...it seemed like what was going on with the Secundia link was tying everything up. So what I will try to do it next day or two is get the update 5 finally downloaded and then try to check these other apps again, including the 2nd Secundia link. Thanks for all the suggestions.
